  • How do you calculate emissions?

You can calculate the emission from your barn by measuring the (additional) concentration of a gas (e.g. ammonia or methane) in the outgoing barn air and multiplying this by the ventilation flow rate.

The ventilation flow rate can be determined in two ways:

    1. Measurement with a measurement range (to be connected to the E-Mission Sphere)

    2. Calculate with the CO2 mass balance method (standard in the E-Mission Sphere).
The inputs we use when calculating the flow rate based on the CO2 mass balance method are:

      1. CO2 concentration inside minus outside the barn

      2. Animal species; the growth curve of the animals determines their CO2 emissions and the related additional ventilation required per day

Emissions are calculated by multiplying the difference of the gas concentration inside and outside the house by the number of m3 of air leaving the house (ventilation flow rate). This yields the emission per animal place per year. We multiply this by the actual number of animals present in the house. This gives you the emission in kg/year.
